Before helping run Mordavia Ryan organised Portal Games, which ran both fantasy and modern horror scenarios. Ryan also sells latex weapons as Paddywhack Productions.

Scott organised a live roleplaying club called The Dark Gate in Auckland before coming up with the idea of Mordavia, inspired by the setting of the computer game Quest for Glory 4: Shadows of Darkness, Copyright © 1994 Sierra Games.
