Overview
The Setting
The Nightmare Circle is set in 'the Lovecraft Mythos', the setting used in the works of authors H.P. Lovecraft and August Derleth, and is the basis for the tabletop game “The Call of Cthulhu”. The mythos is set within a world like our own, but with an underbelly of dangerous occult and the presence of powerful beings ('Elder Gods') who exist outside human laws and morality.
Players do not need to have extensive knowledge of the works of Lovecraft to play, but some familiarity gives a good idea of what atmosphere to expect from a Nightmare Circle game.
The games are set in and around the fictional American town of Arkham, Maine, and the current campaign is in 1922.
Costumes and Props
100% historical accuracy is not expected from the players, but costumes should be in the 'spirit of the age'. Good costumes help with immersion and make the game look fabulous. An internet search should give you an idea of what 1920s clothing looks like. After that, op-shops are a good place to try, as is TradeMe, friend's closets or costume shops. Comfortable shoes are strongly advised.
Costumes are unlikely to be damaged, though you should be aware of things like mud, falling, and other costume damaging events that the GMs have no control over.
Combat
Combat is conducted by use of cap gun weapons to represent firearms or LARP-safe foam weapons to represent melee weaponry. You are required to provide any weapons your character may have. All weapons will be checked before the game for safety.
Out of Character Considerations
Weekend games are run at least twice a year and are played in scout camps in the Auckland region. The location of each event will be posted well in advance of the game, and carpooling can usually be arranged in cases of transport issues. Our two main locations so far have been the Albany Outdoor Education Centre and the Awhitu Environmental Camp.
Games usually begin at 8pm on Friday night and run through to early afternoon on Sunday, including clean-up.
You will need to bring your costume and any props your character has, along with out of character sleeping bag/blankets, pillow and toiletries. Everything else will be provided at the venue, unless otherwise noted in the game announcement.
